Paphos Tombs of the Kings appeared to be the burial area of members of political and administrative elite in the capital of Cyprus under the rule of the Ptolemies. The cemetery was in use from the Hellenistic to the Roman period (2nd century-BC 2nd century AD.).

Paphos Tombs of the Kings consist of a large underground rectangular courtyard, carved in rock. The galleries surrounding the courtyard is supported by Doric limestone columns. The vaults and funeral pockets are carved on the sides of the galleries.

There is evidence to suggest that the tombs are bearing wall, along the lines of the respective tombs of Macedonia, birthplace of the Ptolemies. The closest parallel burial also was found in the Ptolemaic necropolis of Mustafa Pasha in Alexandria.

The architecture in both Greek and cemeteries are derived from the model of Hellenistic house, while the facade of the temple-shaped tomb No. 8 refers to the known makedonian tombs at Vergina in Macedonia.

The tombs were used by early Christians, some of them, as modified properly used and in the Middle Ages by troglodytes. Furthermore, the area was a timeless quarry. The Tombs of the Kings, were pillaged at least the 19th century. Excavations began in the period 1915-16, continued intermittently from 1937 until 1951 and in 1977 began a systematic excavation of nekropoleos until 1990. In the area there are graves of various types: simple pit dug into the rock chamber, consisting of the road and one or two burial chambers containing funerary containers, and finally tombs atrium. These are the most impressive.
