Saranda colones Paphos

Paphos - Sightseeing in Paphos

Saranda kolones means Forty Columns

The Byzantine castle, known as the Forty Columns, located north of the port of Paphos. It took its name from the large number of granite columns found in the area and probably once formed part of the ancient market.

Presumably built in the late 7th century AD to protect the port and city of New Paphos from Arab attacks and later Lusignans the regeneration.

The surrounding a castle wall with a thickness of three meters, eight towers and a moat. Access was by a wooden bridge over the moat. The quadrangle was 35 feet wide and 35 feet long, with a tower at each corner. The main entrance was passing through the fifth tower, shaped like a horseshoe, on the east side.

The castle was destroyed by an earthquake in 1223 and eventually abandoned.
