Paphos Mosaics

Paphos - Museums- Archaeology

Paphos Mosaics located at the most intresting archaeological area in Cyprus, is a must visit for all Cyprus travelers

Cyprus was under the Roman command 2000 years ago (Around Jesus Christ period).

The Roman commanders used to live in Paphos area, as Paphos was the Capital of Cyprus and used to decorate the floors of their villas with mosaic, dating from the third to fifth century AD.

These mosaic floors are considered to be the finest not only in the Mediterranean are but in the whole world, as the Paphos mosaics are very well preserved.

The site where the villas is still being excavating and is located 300 metres from the Paphos harbour at Kato Paphos area.

The mosaics mostly display scenes from Greek mythology and are in good condition and open to visitors at the houses of Dionysus, Orpheus and Aion, the Villa of Theseus and the House of Four Seasons.

Paphos Mosaics were made of small cubes of colorfull marbles and stones, called tesserae, with glass paste added to widen the range of colour.

Some of the symbols we see here at Paphos Mosaics are just amazing! We see that these people discoved very popular symbols a few thousands years ago. Coincidently the Pelta the Lily and the Tri-loop symbols appear at Capernaum Synagogue ruins, Israel, there are also some amazing 3D Mosaics, and some really complex mosaics images.

In the House of Dionysus, 556 sq metres of floor space in 14 rooms are covered with the gorgeous mosaics. The mosaic decorations and the mythological compositions are the main characteristics of this restored Roman villa, dating back to the second century A.D. The house is named “House of Dionysos” thanks to the many depictions of Dionysos, the god of wine. The house most probably belonged to a member of the ruling Roman class or to a wealthy citizen of Paphos.

The villa of Theseus is consisted of more than 100 rooms, the building was the residence of the governor of Cyprus. Many of the rooms and three of the four porticos around the central court are covered with mosaic floors with geometric motifs. Worth seeing are the popular mosaics of “Theseus killing the Minotaur” and the “Birth of Achilles”.

The mosaics of the House of Aion date back to the fourth century A.D and lie close to the mosaics of Dionysus and Theseus. Five mythological scenes worth seeing are: "The bath of Dionysus", "Leda and the Swan", "Beauty contest between Cassiopeia and the Nereids", "Apollo and Marsyas", and the "Triumphant procession of Dionysus".
