The castle of Paphos, was originally a Byzantine fort built to protect the port. Lusignans rebuilt the caste the 13th century, but it was demolished by the Venetians in 1570 during the Ottoman invasion and re-built by the Ottomans that conquered the island since the 16th century.

During its long history, the castle of Paphos, although used for protection and also as a prison, it was also used as a store of salt during the period when the island was a British colony. In 1935 it was declared an ancient monument and is now regarded as one of the emblems of the province of Paphos.
