Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou)

Paphos - Paphos Beaches

One of the finest beaches in Cyprus, where outstanding natural beauty in the legend emerged from the waves of Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and love.

Petra tou Romiou, a rock off the shore along the old road from Paphos to Limassol (or take the exit from the highway Paphos-Limassol), has been regarded since ancient times as the birthplace of Aphrodite, goddes of love and fertility.
Aphrodite used to live in Paphos(Hence there are so many places in paphos relative to the god of love). In Paphos Myth and reallity become one.

According to ancient tradition, Aphrodite was born from the waves on the site off the coast of Cyprus. In his Theogony (178-206), Hesiod provides the story.

Petra tou Romiou means "the Rock of the Greek" and does not refer to Aphrodite but to another myth, that of the Byzantine hero Dighenis. The name of Petra toy romiou linked to Digenis Akritas, the legendary Byzantine hero. Sometime during the years of the Arab invasions (7 - 10 century AD) Digenis grabbed a huge rock with superhuman strength and threw him over the Saracens who were attempting to land on the coast. The rock left from there and then gave to the whole region the name of Petra tou Romiou.

The beach at petra tou romiou is open for visitors. There you can enjoy the clear sea water. A kiosk accross the road sells soft drinks and snacks.
