Aphrodite Hills and the Army Benevolent Fund committee are hoping to get as many people as possible out into the fresh air for a few hours of fun in a historic beauty spot just inland from Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou), known as the Well of the Franks (or Crusaders).

Aphrodite Hills races

Sited alongside a 2000 year-old Roman trade route that linked Dreamers Bay to Kouklia, this sleepy woodland valley houses an ancient staging post known as a hani, where travellers could refresh themselves from the heat on their long journeys. Today, it is a picnic spot popular with those lucky enough to have found it and the old road has been upgraded to take ordinary cars. This makes it ideal as a starting point for a charity 10 km off-road race for the fitter folk, and also a very pleasant and scenic trail for those who prefer to just ramble along and enjoy the views before their picnic.

With fair weather the athletes of all ages assembled at the Aphrodite Hills having travelled from as far as Nicosia, Limasol, Larnaca and Paphos with the UN troops arriving by coach in grand style and they were soon seen donning the Aphrodite Hills T shirts.

With stop watches poised the DCBF, Brigadier Bill Kingdon gave the off before he joined in pacing along the Old Roman Road jostling for position before the pace settled down.

The run and the ramble both follow the same cross-country course along good tracks with an occasional hill. Nothing the average regular runner or walker couldn’t handle however, and there will be lots of water available for the runners on the way round this lovely setting. There are plenty of parking spaces under the trees at the start for spectators to see the runners finish, before popping up to the exciting Aphrodite Hills May Day Market which will be open from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

All entrants have to pass through the Registration Area next to the Aphrodite Hills Golf Clubhouse. This is where you will collect your race numbers and free T-shirts before driving to the start point, so allow an extra 15 minutes for that part of the drive. Registration opens at 8:00 am and the race will start at 9:45 am followed by the ramblers 10 minutes later.

Prize giving is in the Aphrodite Hills Village Square at 1:00 pm and as well as the trophies for the usual age groups, there are some very generous prizes being offered by the Resort to the winning man and woman in each group.
