In September 1159, the saint began carving the original cave. Enlarge the natural opening, removed the dangerous parts of it, he dug inside a tomb and carved altar. This work was completed in September 1160, and since the cave was the "Enkleistra" Saint, ie the place where the inmate lived. The incarceration was suspended in 1165, when the saint left looking for a piece of the Holy Cross. Already in 1170 he had a reputation as a hermit, and the bishop of Paphos Kinnamos Basil ordained him priest and persuaded him to accept a student. In late 1170 or early 1171 began widening and the painting of the original cave, which is the cell Neophytou and the altar. The painting took place gradually as the 1182 / 3 by the painter Theodoros Apsevdis. In cell Neophytou dominates the image of Prayer, and the saint portrayed himself at the feet of Christ. Displayed again in the sanctuary were raised to two praying angels in heaven. It is considered that the work of Theodore Apsevdis associated with artistic aesthetic developments in Costantinoupolis in the late 12th century.

After the death of St. Neophytos (ca. 1214), adopted in coenobitic.
Renovated in 1503 the frescoes in the temple of Enkleistra.

The history of the monastery of Ayios Neophytos well documented in his autobiography of the founder of the Cypriot hermit and writer St. Neophytos.
